Jason Reitman and Me, We Like the Books

December 10, 2007

Last week Sarah scored us sweet tickets to see a sneak preview of Juno that culminated in a Q&A with the director, Jason Reitman (who also directed Thank You For Smoking), as well as the executive producer.

I tend to get starstruck around famous people, or even just supremely talented people, and, dude, this guy is a filmmaker. A really really good one. I was in awe. So I just sat there silently and every once in a while smirked at the silly questions people asked him.

Near the end, someone asked him about the best schools for film, including in the question the fact that Jason Reitman attended USC. In his answer, Jason said that he was actually an English major.

Inexplicably, I found myself cheering. "Woohoo!"

I thought I heard at least a couple other people cheer along with me.

He looked out into the crowd with his hand shielding his eyes and said, "Wow, we've got some English major spirit out there." Then he raised his fist into the air and said, "Yeah! English majors!" while looking at me. "Yeah! English majors!" I cheered back. "Let's go read some books!" "Yeah! Books!"

But, obviously, when I realized my fist was also in the air and I was being a little too enthusiastic for a cheer that was meant to be ironic and I was, in fact, the only one cheering along, I lowered my arm slowly. And Jason finished answering the question.

Could've been worse, though. Sarah said that she wanted to ask him if he'd make her famous.

(The movie, by the way? GREAT. Go see it. Right now. Or as soon as it opens in a theatre near you.)

Find It In:

You're not the only one that's said great things about Juno. I WILL go see it!

Also, you crack me up!

Thanks, man! I'm pretty stoked. And I'm serious about the ideas!

And I'm jealous of your pre-screening adventures. I've been anticipating Juno forever! Can't wait for the weekend.

I can't wait to see this film. It looks so funny and so refreshing. I saw a sneak peak scene with Juno's mom in it, and I laughed my face off. I love her sweatshirt with turtleneck and Jesus-speak.

Yeah English Majors!

With or without Jason Reitman I am going to be so famous. You just wait and see.

I saw the preview for this movie and thought it looked like having a baby as a teenager was no big deal, even something to make jokes about. Is that the case?

As a professional CPS worker-- I can say that having a baby as a teenager is awesome.

The movie definetly portrays it that way, and I now wish I had a baby as a teenager.

Damn my luck.

Let's talk about Gilmore Girls and how it makes me feel as though I should've had a baby girl when I was sixteen if I ever wanted any hope of relating to her in any way.

I'm SO screwed on that one.

Juno deals with the issue in a realistic, honest way. And I appreciated it. And you should go see it, whoever you anonymous commenter are. Teenage pregnancy happens, and it's hard, and Juno is the story of how one girl chose to handle it.
