Apparently I am the kind of girl who reads Anna Karenina in the bathtub.

I got dressed to go to church on Sunday morning, but when I got there I found that there was absolutely no where to put my car. People were parked illegally up and down McKinney Avenue, and I was caught in an endless train of cars circling around and around, each of us looking for an open spot that would never come.

So I went to the mall instead. Where there were lots of open spots.

And later, after purchasing a fab-o Banana Republic top, I got a pedicure while reading Franny & Zooey. It was then that I decided that what I was going to church for I could just as easily get from buying a shirt I'm convinced was made just for me, Salinger, and a kind lady rubbing my feet.

Which is why I spent my Monday night in the tub with Leo Tolstoy. And a glass of jack & coke to help the medicine go down.

Find It In:

That's awesome. 'I couldn't find a parking spot at the church so I went to the mall and got a pedicure.' Every girl needs to pamper herself every now and then.

I saw that Gilmore Girls too and was overjoyed that they were using my word!
I started reading Anna Karenina, but knew I wasn't going to make it through by the time school started again. So this summer, when I am not pregnant or under the watchful eye of the JBU covenant, I will start it again, Spring style, with a drink and a bathtub.

What were you going to church for?

Knowledge, mostly. And to feel God.

I think my statement had less to do with how secular I wanted my sacred experience to be and more to do with how sacred some secular experiences can be.

Speaking of Franny and Zooey, in your head, how do you pronounce Zooey? My husband and I read this book for our bookclub (I know, we're dorks that we have a bookclub for two but it's all sorts of fun- you should try it!) and argued whether it's Zoo-ey (rhymes with gooey) or Zoe(long o-rhymes with Joey) Thoughts? I personally think along the lines of the gooey but my husband adamantly disagrees. Perhaps I can use you as the tiebreaker.

I believe it's supposed to be pronounced Zoo-ee (rhymes with "gooey"). I've heard this elsewhere, have seen a play based on the stories in which it was pronounced this way, and it's also confirmed by wikipedia as the correct pronunciation.

That said, even with knowledge of the correct pronunciation, when I pronounce it, I say Zoe-ee (rhymes with "Joey"). Something about the correct pronunciation seems pretentious to me. I mean, isn't it pretentious enough to be reading Salinger at all? ;)

Side note: Zooey Deschanel was named after Zooey, and she pronounces her name Zoe-ee.

A long time ago I bought Ana Karenina, and just couldn't get into it. I don't know if it was my ADHD, or that perhaps I had a flashier book in the wings. Tell me, do i need to pick it up again?
