God and the Constitution: What I Believe
*January 18, 2008
(Because if there's one day I can get away with this, it's the Friday before a holiday weekend.)
Thank you, everyone, who shared with me what you think about the Huckabee video. They are all very valid points, and I love having such intelligent readers who challenge me to examine what I believe.
And here it is:
I believe that God does not belong in the Constitution.
I believe that this is clearly stated in the First Amendment.
I believe that God is powerful and real and infallible, and because I believe these things, I believe that we do not have to use government to transform society in his name.
I believe that attempting to do so would cause harm to his kingdom rather than further it.
I believe that infringing on people's freedom of religion is the complete opposite ideal this country was founded on.
I believe that we should not follow God with the end goal of prospering.
I believe that it's not a Southern Baptist preacher's job to condemn me for my own sin.
I believe that it's not anyone's job to condemn anyone for their sin.
I believe that people should not pick and choose which Old Testament rules and laws to follow.
I believe that Jesus came to free us from those rules and laws and replaced them with just two: to love God, and to love others.
Everyone may not agree with me, and that's okay. But that's what I believe.

Very well said!

My thoughts exactly- only in a much more articulate and less vitriolic manner. Great job Spring!

I've read some of your blog off and on, and I think it's fantastic. Ann Clipperton told me about it once. Your words are written with intelligent entertainment and honesty. This post has definitely challenged me to consider what I truly believe.
Keep up the writing! It's great.

Spring, I may not always agree with you on some things and maybe not even know whether I should or shouldn't agree with you on those things, but I like that you make me think. So thank you. Keep up the great work!

Hopefully, since I'm always a day late & a dollar short some of your readers will see this. As an "old" lady, I guess I belong in that generation that was mentioned by one of your readers (and let me say, I LOVE reading your blog). The only problem I have with your first comment is that this country was founded by those who believed in God and therefore every word of the constitution is founded in God. That means that God is in the constitution. Do I believe that man's idea or interpretation of what God's Word has to say should be made law? Absolutely not. If that is what was meant by your comment, then I agree. I just want to point out that we cannot believe in God, make him a part of us and then push him aside when dealing w/ "important" issues. That relationship should "color" (for lack of a better word) everything that we say, do or think. That's one older generation's thoughts on the matter. Make fun if you like.
