The Freakonomics Blog has posted a contest prompting readers to write a six-word motto for the U.S.A.
Some of my favorites:
- All your oil belong to us.
- Equal Representation*
*Offer void in D.C. - The most gentle empire so far.
- Supporting Free Trade since 1776 (sic)
- I Can't Believe It's Not Democracy.
- IN UR KOUNTRY, STEALIN UR OILZ
- Bold Leadership for a Brighter Yesterday
- Not the only country in America
- America: Because We Know Better Than You.
- America: You Know You Want It!
- We won world war II. Remember?
- Coming To A Country Near You!
- One nation, in spite of itself
- United We Stood. Divided We Are.
What struck me as interesting is that there was only one positive motto for every 85 or so negative ones. Nature of the contest, or nature of Freakonomics readers? Or nature of Americans?

Wow, those are incredibly creative. I'm impressed.

Gosh, we are just so positive! Haha. It's actually quite sad how negative we are.

I like "Coming to a Country Near You."
Maybe the reason they're so negative is that oftentimes the really creative people who are most eager to share their talents can be pretty cynical. Not ALL of them, but a lot of times.

America, we live here so that you don't have to.
