Hiatus.

April 4, 2008

On Tuesday, just a few minutes after I got April Fooled by a coworker, I wrote a post announcing that I was shutting down my blog indefinitely. And then posted it.

The plan was to leave it up for a while, watch some people freak out, and then post a comment exclaiming "April Fool's!"

But after a few minutes I realized that 1. It was a super lame idea, by no means original and 2. It's likely no one would freak out. Which led me to realize that 3. It's what I really want to do, no fooling. So I took down the silly post and thought for a while.

My one-year blogiversary passed by last week without any celebration. I was faintly aware of it, but only in the form of realizing that I'm in a very different place than I was last year. The main topics I used to rely on don't look anything like they used to. I've stopped writing about marriage because it's continued to get harder and harder, and I lack the courage to write honestly about that. I've found a church I want to dedicate my whole life to, and I feel as though I can quit searching for now. Rufus, well, I love the little bugger, but every month no longer brings new surprises, which is a very good thing. And my job. My job is the best surprise of all. I love it. I can actually envision my career unfolding in front of me. And that has filled a hole much bigger than I was even aware of.

So I'm going to try out a hiatus. For just a couple of weeks. I intend to be back on April 22 with a post celebrating Rufus' 2nd (16th) birthday. My sweet (read: neurotic) puppy is officially an adolescent.

And in the meantime, I'm going to try to do a little writing for just myself. I'm aching to write about what's actually going on in my life, and this, sadly, isn't the place for it.

Thank you all so much for reading and for your support. I'll see you back here on the 22nd.

Find It In:

Spring,

I have been reading your blog off and on for over a year now. While we vary quite a bit on our political views, a lot of our religious views seem to align. Its also comforting to read about other people going through the whole quarter-life problems. Admittedly, any problems I have are decidedly what I like to refer to as "first-world" problems they are still very serious within the context of our lives. I hope you figure out whatever it is your going through right now and can return to writing on a regular basis. Of all of the blogs I read yours ranks in top 3 or 4 best written, though I could tell your heart hasn't been in it lately.

your internet friend,

anthony

I'll miss being your sometimes-silent lurker. Did you ever post about the church you want to dedicate your life to? I don't recall reading anything about it, and I'm insanely curious.

I read your site via an RSS feeder and have since the first day you moved. I really enjoy it and hope that you'll find that you miss it and return! I do know, though, that the urge to blog comes and goes. I had a HUGE lapse of interest with CapnK8 and only last week began to start getting my blogger hat back on.

The reason I mention that I get your site via RSS is that I never saw your April Fools' post. Had I, I would have freaked out. So there you have it.

If you don't blog, by all means write a book already. You're too good a writer to waste. :)

I agree with Kate and would love to read a book written by you. About the marriage issue; its hard, I totally agree. Just know that you aren't alone in that.

I hope things get better, and in the mean time, I will miss you writing.

And just a note: I missed you're writings on marriage. So much of what you wrote was a direct echo of the things I experience in my own marriage and I felt a little less alone by reading yours.

Okay, now that I've probably guilt-tripped the hell out of you, lol, let me say I'm sending a few prayers up for you. Blessings! ~ L

Spring,

I will miss you and I hope that this is just brief.

As for marriage, harder than you ever thought, isn't? Hard to comprehend what it will be like until you actually live it.

I can assure you it gets easier once you get settled in and find your groove. Hang in there, enjoy your break and get back here!

Have a good time writing for yourself Spring. We all need a time on our own. I'll be eagerly awaiting for your comeback.
Take care!

Spring,
I'm a high school student who stumbled across your blog one day while searching for a haircut(google images brought up that picture of Cameron Diaz from the holiday). Your writing has opened me up to the world of blogging. I've read several, and none of them have become a favorite like yours has. Even though we don't have much in common, I find myself hoping I can grow up and have as much talent and skill as you do! Have fun on your blog break but make sure you come back. I've wanted to comment many times but for some reason have been hesitant, so this really motivated me!

You've been talking about this, and feeling it for a long time, I think. I also think this is a good thing.
I think all bloggers go through this. However, I hope you come back. You're one of my favoritest blogs (In my reader, you're filed as 1 - Awesomest). And I hope the hiatus isn't permanent.

Spring,

As much as I will miss reading what you post for the next weeks, I am excited that you are taking some time off to write for yourself again. Your saying that has made me realize how much I miss doing that too. I'm excited also to hear about the church and the job... thanks for sharing about the job. It's comforting to hear people say they love their jobs because I am not at all at that point yet and am skeptical about whether or not I will ever be at that point. It is truly encouraging that you love yours, and I am happy for you!

I think it's healthy to take a blog break. I tried, but failed miserably. So I wish you luck :)

Can't wait till your return.

So, way back in December of 05, I started a xanga because I loved reading yours so much. Then, I moved over to blogspot when you left xanga. See, look at your profound influence on my life! And now I love blogging. My posts are probably pretty lame right now because life is so crazy at the moment, but maybe one day I'll get back to writing things that are a little more insightful.

Don't stay gone long. Loves.

Well, I am glad you didn't do that joke. I'm terrible with distinguishing between the fools and the not-fools. I suck!

Come back soon!

I'm slowly trying to return to blogging. I definitely lost steam with my inability to decide what to write and bumpy transition from xanga to wordpress.

I am eager for your return as you have been a guide through this. Good luck!

It's times like these that you must see the value of what you are doing as a blogger. The people who read your blog regularly - who are influenced by it.

I'll be thinking of you as you enjoy your hiatus and reflect on what this blog means to you. Who knows - maybe some of your personal writing will eventually become something you can post here - or share with a wider audience.

Rooting for you.

So I have kept checking your blog regularly even though I know you are taking a break for two reasons:

1. It's a total habit, and I love it.
2. I've really been hoping that you would come back early.

Looks like you are a woman of your word.
