My favorite image is the black bow.

This poem is running through my head constantly lately, and I figured that getting it down here will provide some sort of relief. Not that Billy Collins' poetry is really something one needs relief from. But keeping this blog is a little like keeping a notebook beside my bed to jot down things that are preventing me from falling asleep, and right now I desperately need to fall asleep. If you will.

Love
by Billy Collins

The boy at the far end of the train car
kept looking behind him
as if he were afraid or expecting someone

and then she appeared in the glass door
of the forward car and he rose
and opened the door and let her in

and she entered the car carrying
a large black case
in the unmistakable shape of a cello.

She looked like an angel with a high forehead
and somber eyes and her hair
was tied up behind her neck with a black bow.

And because of all that,
he seemed a little awkward
in his happiness to see her,

whereas she was simply there,
perfectly existing as a creature
with a soft face who played the cello.

And the reason I am writing this
on the back of a manila envelope
now that they have left the train together

is to tell you that when she turned
to lift the large, delicate cello
onto the overhead rack,

I saw him looking up at her
and what she was doing
the way the eyes of saints are painted

when they are looking up at God
when he is doing something remarkable,
something that identifies him as God.

Find It In:

I've been in love with this poem for many years. I read it to Zack once as an example of a fantastic love poem. He didn't get it. I was all, BUT THE BEAUTY! And he was like, WHERE'S THE METER? and I said YOU'VE GOTTA BE KIDDING ME.

We have this same discussion about Radiohead frequently. I say something like, CLIMBING UP THE WALLS IS THE HOTTEST SEX SONG EVER. And he says, COMMENTS LIKE THAT MAKE ME THINK YOU NEED MORE THERAPY. and I say, HOW CAN YOU NOT HEAR THE ORGASAM IN THIS PART? SEXY! And he's all UUUUUUGGGGH.

I have almost given up on my dream of having music videoesque sex to Radiohead. Almost.

If he ever saw this comment, his head would explode.
